Love or Loathe: Chunky Jewelry (a.k.a. Junk Jewelry)

There are some women whose eyes light up at very the sight of chunky jewelry whereas others consider themselves too high-toned for it. You know the diamonds-are-a-woman’s-best-friend kind. What they don‘t realize is that, for creating a personal style rather than a cookie cutter style, chunky or junk jewelry should be made an integral part of a our wardrobe.

Why Loathe

– I am allergic to anything other than gold and silver.

– It’s too bold for my personality – can’t pull it off.

– I like only delicate stuff.

– I think it looks juvenile and cheap.

Why Love

– Oh so colorful! Can match any outfit.

– Available in so many irresistible shapes, lengths and sizes. Can never get enough of them.

– So inexpensive when compared to gold or diamond.

– Brings life to any outfit.

My Take

I am a sucker for junk jewelry. My eyes get all sparkly and excited when I spot them even if it’s a small road side stall in NYC. So I would like to warn you that this article is going to be lop sided and I will make my best attempt to convert you loathers. Who knows you might just decide to give it a try. Here are a few reasons (excuses) why you should buy and wear some bold chunky jewelry.

Statement Pieces

These pieces make a statement and a bold one at that. They add visual interest even to the most boring outfit. A simple solid dress in a single color can look terrific when paired with the right earrings, necklace or bracelet. Plus, it’s a lot easier to find one-of-a-kind pieces that will totally transform your look.

Complete the Look

If you are wearing a blouse with a lot of detailing at the neck, an oversized necklace would spoil the show. Instead, you can go for a bracelet away from the detailing to polish the look. If you are wearing a multicolored outfit and you choose shoes in a totally contrasting color, you can match your necklace with your shoes to make the look more deliberate and put together.

Dress Up or Dress Down

A simple choice of accessories can dress up or dress down the same outfit and give it a totally unique look. Depending on the occasion, you can choose bold or subtle pieces to go with the look. For instance, a black shift dress is like a canvas that can be paired with metallic jewelry and sandals for parties; bold turquoise necklace and red shoes for work; green / yellow chunky necklace and leopard print shoes for an evening out with friends; wooden jewelry and gladiator flats for a casual daytime look.

Can Own Multiple Pieces

Since they are so inexpensive, you can buy them frequently to update your look and own multiple pieces. This gives you the opportunity to experiment with different looks without drilling a hole in your pocket. Even if you aren’t sure of it, you are not going to feel guilty about never wearing it and who knows when you might just come up with the right clothes for it!

Mix and Match

You will be amazed at how many outfits, the same necklace or earrings can be paired with and vice versa. And each time both the outfit and the accessories look completely different. It’s ideal for mix and match. When you include the dimension of jewelry along with clothes in your mix and match routine, the possibilities are just endless.

And last but not least, each piece looks so amazing. How can you not buy / wear it? How can you resist it? If you are avoiding for health reasons, buy it from reputed stores like Claire’s and you should do fine.

Let’s face it. We cannot go in for designer pieces or shop in expensive boutiques all the time. But by using the right accessories, we can give our outfits a unique personal touch. I hope you are convinced enough to give it a try.
