Skin Care: 9 Reasons why Epilators are a Boon not a Pain

What’s the 1st thing that comes to your mind when you think of epilators? ‘Oh God, that sounds too painful!’ In an era where Brazilian waxes and stiletto heels rule, can epilators be that painful? Especially when weighed against the enormous benefits you derive from it. Read on to learn about the advantages of using epilators over other traditional hair removal techniques like waxing and shaving.
Epilators pluck hair from the root and this cannot happen without you feeling the sting, at least the 1st few times. But one look at the amazing features and I guarantee you will be totally sold!
|
|
1. Removes the tiniest hair - Epilators can remove hair as small as 0.5mm in length. Isn’t that just amazing? Unlike waxing where you have to wait for hair to grow a certain length, an epilator can pluck the minutest hair. This is extremely beneficial coz hair doesn’t grow uniformly all over. At any given time, some are longer than others. Instead of covering yourself in long clothes while waiting for hair to grow you can flaunt your beautiful skin anytime you wish.
2. Huge cost savings - An epilator costs anywhere between $30 and $120 and lasts for at least 5-6 years. Even assuming you buy one for $100, it’s less than what you would be spending on waxing in one summer!! It’s virtually free for the next 5 years which is the minimum it would last. My 1st epilator lasted 8 years and the 2nd one is already 6 years old but has not given me a single reason to think of a replacement. The other alternative, shaving, involves buying razors, creams, foams and what not. Ultimately it turns out to be pretty expensive too.

3. Long lasting - One sitting leaves you hair free for 4 weeks. This is even better than waxing coz you have removed the smallest hair visible which means there are no stubbles here and there that appear every couple of days. Compare this with shaving every other day and sometimes even on consecutive days – what a pain!!
4. Time saving - One leg takes about 15 min at the start and then it comes down to about 10 min as you gain expertise. Even assuming one sitting takes about 30 min and you do this once a month, that’s a lot of time saved. Waxing as a process might seem faster but once you take into account the time spent traveling to and from the salon and waiting for your turn, you will realize how time consuming it is! Don’t even think of comparing this with the time spent on shaving every other day – such a colossal waste of time!
5. Very convenient - You can do this in the comfort of your home anytime of the day or night. No need for prior salon appointments or rushing to make it before the salon closes. Think of this situation – it’s 9 in the night and you suddenly remembered you need to wear a dress tomorrow for an important event. Which parlor is open at 9 pm? Use your epilator and your legs are dress-ready by 9:30 – yay!
6. Reduced hair growth - Prolonged use of epilators results in finer and lesser hair growth with each use. This in turn makes the process a lot quicker with time leaving your legs silky smooth longer. Shaving on the other hand results in rougher hair since hair is just cut at the surface and not removed from the root. So you forget to shave your leg one day and it’s a thorny mess!
7. Totally portable - Imagine going on a long vacation and looking for a local salon for a waxing appointment! It might not only come in the way of your planned activities but may also turn out to be really expensive. Take the epilator with you in it’s own convenient pouch and you are hair free wherever you go. You can sit down for hair removal once you are in the comfort of your hotel after a hectic or relaxing day.
8. Pain reduces with use - This is probably the greatest news for all those women who steer clear of epilators coz of the pain factor. It’s only the 1st few times that are painful. After the 4th / 5th time since there is lesser hair growth and your skin gets used to the feeling, the pain drastically reduces and after about 10 times, you feel practically no pain whatsoever! What could be better than that?
9. For the whole body - Epilators can be used on arms, legs, underarms and even bikini area. Before you freak out – most of the recent ones come with different attachments like the shaver head for underarms and bikini area. There are also other features that aid the process by lifting the hair for easy plucking or have a built in light for spotting even the finest hair.
Go ahead, try it – you won’t regret it!

Are there any side effects of epilating underarms?
Hi, I have heard that women use epilators on their underarms as well. Is that safe? Are there any side-effects? I am a little scared to try it out!

Re: Are there any side effects of epilating underarms?
Hi Irene, I myself use epilator for my underarms. There are a few precautions you must take though: - Make sure the hair is not too long. It would be painful then. For the 1st time, you can shave your underarms, let the hair grow back just a little and then try the epilator. - Make sure the skin is stretched to the maximum. This considerably reduces the pain. - Do one small area at a time. This way you just have to stretch that area. - Apply cocoa butter cream after you are done. Your skin will remain soft and any redness will disappear without the burning sensation. Be prepared to bear a little pain - coz this area is a lot more sensitive than your arms or legs. The pain will reduce with each use. Also, try a small area first and wait for a day to see if your skin has any reactions before doing your underarms completely. If it doesn't work for you, you always have the shaver head attachment that you can use - same as shaving without the mess!
