13 Secrets to a Smooth Flawless Complexion.

My flawless skin has been receiving compliments for as long as I can remember. I didn’t realize it was that big a deal till more and more people started asking me what the secret to my glowing skin was. So I decided to pen down my basic skin care routine hoping it will be useful for anyone who desires a beautiful, healthy skin.

Most women think of only their face when it comes to skin care. No doubt it’s very important and that’s what everyone will first notice but you shouldn’t ignore the rest of your body. Only then can you truly boast of a healthy skin.

You might be a little relieved to know I am definitely not the kind of person who spends hours and hours each day or hundreds of dollars on skin care products to maintain good skin. I neither have the time nor the inclination. I believe in easy-to-do, affordable, quick yet extremely effective techniques that you can inculcate in your daily routine.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

1. Drink (lots of) Water – Water is excellent for your skin. Drinking at least 8 glasses a day will keep your skin soft, supple and sufficiently hydrated.

2. Shower Daily – As silly as it may sound, I know people who don’t bathe everyday. It’s perfume to their rescue. We live in times where pollution is ever increasing. This, coupled with the extremely hectic lifestyles we lead, is certainly not easy on our skin. It’s not just us but even our skin experiences a lot of stress and fatigue. Once a day warm shower will unclog all the pores and keep our skin feeling refreshed.

3. Avoid Soap – Soaps are very acidic and will affect the ph balance of your skin making it dry and rough. As far as possible, avoid using soap for the body and face.

4. Exfoliate – Try an exfoliating body wash instead of the regular one. This will help remove dead skin cells thereby making way for healthy smooth skin. Dove’s Exfoliating Body Wash is very good and not even expensive. I also love the Caress Tahitian Renewal Silkening body wash.

5. Bath Sponge / Loofah – Whether or not you use exfoliating body wash, always use a loofah. The rubbing action not only results in exfoliation but also improves blood circulation, which in turn results in rejuvenated healthy skin.

6. Wash Face – You should wash your face with face wash 3-4 times a day. As long as you use a moisturizing face wash, don’t worry about dry skin. If you don’t want to wash your face at work, wash your face 1st thing in the morning, after you get back from work and before going to bed.

7. Face Wash – For the face, always, always use face wash. This has a lot less chemicals than soap and is infinitely better for facial skin. Olay exfoliating face wash is really good. I love the Garnier light face wash too – no lingering feeling but just the right amount of moisture.

8. Night Routine – This is when your body gets all the time to absorb any cream you apply without it getting washed away or covered by layers of makeup or pollution. Make sure each night before going to bed you apply moisturizing cream on your elbow, knee and any other rough patch on your body and a thin film on your face as well. During winter, you can apply cream/lotion all over your body. Women with normal to dry skin can use Palmer’s Cocoa Butter. This is the best cream I’ve used till date. It smoothens your skin overnight! Women with oily skin need to be careful about using cocoa butter cream on your face – it might make your skin really oily. It should be fine for the body though. For face, you can try something light like Nivea or Dove moisturizers – but make sure you apply very little on the face.

9. Remove Makeup – Apply makeup before heading out but also remove makeup as soon as you get back home. Don’t ever go to bed with makeup on. This will adversely affect your skin and if you continue doing it for a long time, you might damage your skin irreparably. You should go to bed with a clean skin and a dab of moisturizer.

10. Cure Constipation – Constipation can also result in skin breakouts. Instead of worrying about your acne, get a cure for constipation. Drinking water should help. Include a lot of fiber in your daily diet. If it still doesn’t help, seek medical advice. Once you get rid of constipation, your skin will start glowing.

11. Treat Dandruff – I have seen a lot of women who have a perfectly healthy skin on their arms and legs but their face is a mess. This may be due to dandruff. So instead of finding a cure for your skin problem and spending recklessly on skin treatments, treat your dandruff and your skin will automatically improve.

12. Quality Products – Don’t experiment with cheap products on your skin. Stick to reputed brands and good quality products only especially when it comes to makeup / cosmetics. As it is, these are all chemicals (yes, even if it claims to be natural, mineral or herbal!) and would definitely have some effect on your skin. So why torture your skin further by using bad quality stuff?

13. Skin Vacation – Applying makeup is good and for most jobs, preferable too. But don’t make it a habit – like applying makeup even when you are at home gardening or doing laundry. Give your skin a break every once in a while. If possible, observe a ‘no makeup’ day once a week. This will allow your skin to get some fresh air, breathe freely and get ready for the chemical attack for the next 6 days!!

This is basically my routine and it has really helped me enjoy a flawless, glowing and younger looking skin. If you have any specific questions or concerns, do feel free to ask me.
