1. Start With a Smooth Hair-free Body

It’s time to let you skin see the light of the day and get some fresh summer breeze. And when you do wear short dresses, sleeveless tops or bikinis, you want to make sure your body looks silky smooth and there is no unwanted hair growth acting as an eye sore!

One thing that can turn painful during summer is the thought of having to shave your legs every day or even every other day! Make a resolution this summer to stay away from razors. Try an epilator for incredibly long lasting results that’s also easy on the pocket. Plus the epilator can be used for your arms, under arms, bikini area and even face – so no more spending time and money at the salon for any kind of hair removal. You can use it at the convenience of your home and stay hair-free for weeks!

2. Say Yes to Bright, Light, Cool Cotton

Now that you are ready to show some skin, you can stash away all the heavy, boring winter clothes and bulky jackets. Yay!! For me, the best part about summer is that you can walk out the door showing off all the summery clothes without having to bundle yourself up in layers.

Think comfy cotton for summer. It’s the best fabric for your skin and will help you stay cool in the hot weather. For those who dismiss cotton as a boring fabric, think again! Now is the time to wear all those beautiful summer sun dresses, bright skirts and blouses, fun tees, sexy shorts, chic bermudas, embroidered tunics, sleek capris…. all in cotton! You can also wear linen but it tends to crease more than cotton so you are better off keeping it for the really casual occasions. My favorite linen piece for summer is the classy yet casual white drawstring linen trousers – yum!! You do get linen in dressy styles but they almost always have synthetic lining – so not for summer!

Don’t forget to pick up a couple of light cardigans or jackets for those cool summer nights and to make those sexy summer dresses work appropriate!

3. Have Fun With Attention-Grabbing Bags

Summer is the time to carry light, colorful, fun bags to go with your clothes. Bags made of natural fibers like cotton, jute, linen or straw look best with your summer casuals. The canvas beach tote fits in all your beach essentials and comes in a variety of interesting styles. But make sure you don’t go overboard with the brights or your entire outfit will look too busy. If your clothes have interesting colors, prints or patterns, go with a sober bag. If you are wearing white or other neutrals, make the bag your focal piece!

4. Stay Fresh With Cool Hats

Hats not only look great with your summer clothes but also give you the much needed protection against the sun. No matter how great your sunscreen is, there is nothing like a big brimmed hat to keep the sun off your face. There is something utterly feminine about these hats too. You can even go for the ones with small flowers or bows on the side to add that little something extra. Remember to choose lighter colors and natural fabrics to keep the heat off. And hats are any day a lot more appealing and convenient as compared to an umbrella!

5. Look Terrific in Serious Shades

Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection are a must for the blazing summer afternoons. I would suggest you go a step further and buy polarized sunglasses. They protect your eyes against the sunlight reflecting from water, shiny metals or glass surfaces. The quality of your vision also improves dramatically as they provide better contrast. You will especially appreciate the difference when you are on the beach or out driving on a hot summer day – you will experience no squinting and your eyes will feel rested even after a long day under the sun.

Contrary to what most people think, polarized glasses don’t command a premium. In fact, you will be surprised to know it’s very difficult to find polarized version of the designer sunglasses. So, I am not asking you to go all out and splurge. You can if you want to. But, you can find protective sunglasses at every price range. Just remember to wear them when you step out in the sun. Apart from all the obvious benefits, they take your style quotient up a notch!

6. Show off Your Mani / Pedi

What better time to show off those bright toe nails? After covering yourself in pantyhose and closed shoes, it’s time to reveal those perfectly polished toes! Even if you are the kind who doesn’t do manicures all year long, you can’t resist them in summer. After all, your finger nails should complement your toe nails!! If you haven’t gone for a manicure or pedicure in a long time, I suggest you get it done professionally the first time. Once you get the right shape and length for your nails and are up-to-date with the latest shades in nail lacquer, you can do the maintenance yourself at home! Ofcourse, if you can afford it, pamper yourself every so often – but don’t spend all the money just coz you think it’s a hassle to do it at home. It’s a lot easier than you think to get salon quality nails at home at a fraction of the cost!

7. Strut Around in Sexy Sandals

What’s the point in getting all your toes prepped up, if you don’t show them off in sexy sandals? You can say bye-bye to painful heels, coz in summer, beautiful = wearing flats and being comfortable!! You have an incredible range of options to choose from – metallic flats, embellishments and flowers on thong sandals, peeptoes, dressy flip flops and so on. A must buy this summer is the gladiator flats – you can pair them with shorts, skirts, capris, even dresses! They are the easiest way to dress up a casual outfit and look hot!

8. Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen – A Summer Essential!

I cannot stress this enough! No matter how little you think your exposure to the sun is going to be, NEVER skip the sunscreen. Depending on your skin tone, texture and activity level you may choose anything between SPF 20 and SPF 70. If you have normal skin and medium complexion you SPF 30 is the minimum you need and you can go beyond SPF 70 on your beach days. Make sure you choose waterproof formulas for the beach. Don’t apply moisturizer before applying sunscreen – it diminishes the protection offered by sunscreen. If your skin is too dry, choose a moisturizing sunscreen. Don’t limit it to your face – use sunscreen on all the exposed skin and reapply as needed.

9. Toss Heavy Make-up

Summer is the time to let loose and not be worried about your make up running down your cheeks or getting wiped with your sweat. The one thing your skin needs is sunscreen. Anything other than that is optional. I am not saying your should go completely sans makeup. But try to keep it really minimal.

My suggestion would be to apply sunscreen and light powder to even out your skin tone. It also helps if your sunscreen is greasy or sticky, which is often the case with higher SPF ones. Skip the concealer and foundation as they tend to run down as the mercury rises! You can go for a waterproof eyeliner and mascara if you want – but if you are going to be out in the sun with sunglasses, I say, why bother! Save them for your cool summer evenings and night outs and give your skin a break during the day. Apply a moisturizing lip gloss or tinted lip balm for the day and go for richer lipsticks once the sun sets.

10. Try a Fabulous New Haircut

No makeover can be called complete without a hairstyle change. Go for a cut that you have never tried before, preferably, way different from your current style. You will amazed at how instantly and effortlessly a great haircut can dramatically change your look! Summer is a time to be a free spirit – so go for a cut that is low maintenance and keeps you looking young and fresh. Try to avoid using products such as hair spray and gels – you want your hair to be free just like you! Personally, I love short hair for the summer – great for the sweaty days and you can wash it often without worrying about spending hours styling it! Plus, short hair takes years off your age – just like that!

There you go – Now you’ve got all the tools you need to completely transform your look and get ready to enjoy the incredible things this season has to offer! There is something in the summer air that lifts your spirits. And when you know you look stunning, your confidence reaches new highs that puts a spring (or summer?) in your step!
